The Playstation Portable (PSP) was originally designed as "the new Walkman", rather than, as the name implies, a portable version of the Playstation gaming system (it is manufactured by the electronics giant Sony who also produce both the Walkman And Playstation 1/2/3). Although Sony announced the new machine early in 2003 they did not even have an "artist's impression" of what the machine would look like, only the technical specifications.
